This week we started a new unit, Unit 10, which will run in conjunction with Unit 21 (Editing Techniques). We have spent a lot of time learning the editing techniques, so now we need to learn about camera shots, angles, and movements. This week you learned the basic camera terminology and why shots/angles are used, and had the chance to create your own sequence using what you had learned. We also started to think about audience positioning and how camerawork can be used to engage the audience with the hero or protagonist. We looked at Dracula and then we studied the opening scene from ET. All resources are below:
In lesson this week we have been focusing on how elements of mise-en-scene impact upon meaning. We studied the final scene from the film Elizabeth and considered how props, costume, make-up and hair, set design, colour and lighting, and framing all contribute to the creation of meaning. Your independent study task is to write a 800 word analysis of the scene using your notes from class. Remember to use the denotation/connotation structure, OR the PEE paragraph structure.
This week we focused on the use of sound. Please refer to the PP below for all the clips we used in class as well as key terminology. Your task this week is to analyse your selected 4-5 minute sequence.
PRACTICE PREPARATION RESPONSES: NARRATIVE AND GENRE ANALYSIS
You now need to write preparation analytical responses about the four films you have viewed in class. You have had the chance to read an exemplar response and see the level of micro analysis required. You have also had the chance to share ideas in class for Halloween and Zodiac; you are on your own for The Strangers and Prisoners. Remember to talk about how camera, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene communicate the narrative and genre. Use these sheets as guidance.
STORY & SCREENPLAY
In preparation for Assignment 2 for this unit, you are going to create three initial new ideas for a film in the genre of your choosing. Following the lesson today you should now be able to write a brief description or pitch for your three films - see examples on your worksheet.
